Computerised Balloon Launcher

The Computerised Balloon Launcher system has been developed to inflate a weather balloon with a measured volume of hydrogen and then release it. The PLC operates all the solenoid valves, warning lights and measurement calculations.

The screen based graphics control system comprises on/off, alarm warnings and analog monitoring via communications to the PLC.

The required volume of hydrogen can be set on the PLC by the operator (using a PC) and depends on which radiosonde balloon size is used (eg. 100, 200 or 350 gram).

This Computerised Balloon Launcher hardware consists of the following units:

·       Launch Control Unit that houses the power distribution, motor control, PLC, hazardous I/O, intrinsic safety barriers and the ESD.

·       Hydrogen Flow Unit, which consists of the measurement, flow control and supply manifold modules.

·       Compressed Air System, which consists of the air compressor and the distribution manifold.

·       Water Spray Unit.

·       Launch Table.
